Well, Rolling Stone just posted their editors’ and readers’ picks for the 50 Best Songs Over 7 Minutes Long and it is quite interesting. They’re in alphabetical order, so keep that in mind when you see the first one listed is “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and not “Hey Jude”. Although wouldn’t it be better to have “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” in there? Is that over 7 minutes? I love that Can’s “Bel Air” is on there! Take a look and see which ones you agree with and which you don’t…and let’s do a little Sh*t L*st and pick 5 that we’d remove and what 5 we’d replace them with. Sound good?
Click through, cousins…
I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours….
1) I would remove “In the Court of the Crimson King” and replace it with “21st Century Schizoid Man”…although “Moonchild” is a great one too.
2) Remove “When the Levee Breaks”, replace with “Carouselambra” (just cuz I’m loving that song these days)
3) Honestly, I might replace “Sad Eyed Lay of the Lowlands” by Dylan with either “Desolation Row” or the live version of “Visions of Johanna” from the Biograph box.
4) Bye Bye “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” by Wilco. Hello “It’s A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl” by Faust. Real Krautrock!
5) I’d def replace The Doors “The End” with “Light My Fire”.
Other removables: Green Day, NIN, G n’ R, and probably LCD Soundsytem
Good Calls: “Starship Trooper”, “3 Days”, “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking”, “Willie The Pimp”
Also: Where’s “In-A-Gadd-Da-Vida”?
Now you…

The list has got some good stuff all up on it. It’s hard for me to critique, because I don’t know what songs are 7+ minutes.
By the way, lately I’m in love with early Bowie. The music and the man. So androgynously sexy!

Oh, and leave Spiders on! Why won’t you ever give Wilco a chance, Newms? It’s not them you dislike, it’s their fans. Oh that’s me. But you’re supposed to not like me because we’re related.
BTW, where’d you get that trippy image above? I dig it.

“In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” is there, Newms. Fourth page in.
I don’t know about 5 I’d get rid of, but I think Phish should have made the list. You Enjoy Myself deserves to be listed along with those other prog-rock classics.
Also, I noticed Traffic didn’t make the cut. An oversight by the RS editors?

Jeff Tweedy’s face makes me ill. That image is from King Crimson’s ‘In The Court of the Crimson King’ album. I think it’s the back cover.
Dave, what Traffic song would you add? ‘Low Spark’?

Yeah, that’s the one I was thinking of.
Hey, isn’t there some joke about a radio DJ playing long songs so he can take a shit or smoke a joint or something?
Damn, I suck at remembering jokes.
