Yellowbirds is Sam Cohen of Apollo Sunshine’s most recent musical outlet. Their Royal Potato Family debut The Color came out in 2011 and is a absolutely beautiful collection of songs. But I will say that Brooklyn’s Ex Cops make a music that is infectious, the kind that grabs you more and more after every listen. Which actually seems like more of a rarity these days. I first heard the band’s praises from a number of pals. First from Miss Nicole Atkins, then from Julian Woolsey of Perfect Prescription and Rock Edition fame, and last but not least, Sam Davis at Relix and Dog Gone Blog.
Now I’ve finally heard Minerva Lions’ new EP, Great Strides, Priestess and Queen for myself and am quite excited for the Lions’ live action!

(via EVR.com): Smoke Fairies are Katherine Blamire and Jessica Davies. The pair met at school back in the 90′s and did some singing together in their school’s choir before picking up guitars and studying their parent’s record collections, favoring the classic American sides of the 70′s. The pair eventually spent some time in New Orleans and soaked up even more U.S. blues. Neil Young must’ve been among those dusty LPs as the Smoke Fairies have recorded a stunning version of Shakey’s Alabama. Infusing those lessons with traditional British folk, the duo craft dark, humid, and intricately layered songs that have won over the likes of Bryan Ferry and Richard Hawley. Stateside, Smoke Fairies count Jack White as a fan—he produced and played guitar and drums on their single Gastown and released it on his Third Man Records label.

On June 21st, White Hills new album, H-p1, will be released on Thrill Jockey.
Musically, H-p1, White Hills second full-length for Thrill Jockey, expands on the explorations of previous albums in ambience, noise, and space rock all led by guitarist Dave W.’s blistering guitar solos. This is the most fully realized White Hills album to date and the one that takes them furthest from their pure space rock roots. It is also their most angry record. It is a reaction to what White Hills sees as government co-opted and controlled by corporations. It is a wake up call.

I’m happy to be welcoming my pal, Todd Bogin (above right) and his excellent folk-rock outfit, Whale Belly to Beyond Beyond is Beyond on Thursday. As a live band, these guys are full of untamed roller coaster ride-like energy.
After bringing us that energy live on air at noon (EST) on Thursday, they’ll bring it to their sold out show that night at Mercury Lounge. But no worries, they’ll play the Merc again on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
I’m excited to welcome D. Charles Speer (Dave Shuford) of the No-Neck Blues Band and D. Charles Speer & the Helix to Beyond Beyond is Beyond on Thursday. Dave has two great new records coming out, one solo and one with the Helix and we’re gonna chat and play stuff from both albums.

Beyond Beyond is Beyond will celebrate its 100th show on East Village Radio this Thursday! And it’s also pretty much the 2-year mark for the show.
So other than celebrating by rubbing bbibirthday cake all over my chest, which will probably be lost on radio listeners, I will be spinning all kinds of music that I played on my first 3 shows. Stuff from the likes of CCR, Hawkwind, Bubble Puppy, Bryan Scary, Yes, Wishbone Ash, Aphrodite’s Child, Juicy Lucy, Syd Barrett, Ween and Agitation Free.
And not only that, on a sad note, I will pay tribute to the late great legendary blues-rock guitarist, Gary Moore who just passed away on Sunday, February 6th. I’ll play stuff from his bands Skid Row, Colosseum II, solo and his absolute best guitar work with Thin Lizzy. Do you know what Lizzy song that appears on?
