Thursday, noon – 2pm ET
The great Mexican Summer Records has just released the version of cult psych folk singer, Linda Perhacs’ one and only album, the way that Linda herself hoped it would be released originally. It may have taken forty years, but now Linda and the rest of us lucky listeners can hear and see her album the way it was meant to be heard and seen. I will be talking to Linda about the album and about her life on the next Beyond Beyond is Beyond show on East Village Radio, so come on along and take the trip with me…
Beyond Beyond is Beyond live on East Village Radio, Thursday noon-2pm ET
UPDATE: LISTEN TO THE ARCHIVED INTERVIEW HERE!
About Parallelograms from Mexican Summer’s website:
Mexican Summer is beyond psyched to present a hefty, heavy gatefold edition of Linda Perhacs’s lone album, Parallelograms. On the strength of this single album, recorded in 1970, Linda Perhacs remains a towering figure in the world of psychedelia, folk, female singer-songwriters, and acid-visionaries alike. Lauded by artists as diverse as Daft Punk, Devendra Banhart, Animal Collective, and Swedish metal band Opeth, in the 21st century, her album remains a testament to her singularity of vision.
Born Linda Arnold in northern California, Perhacs spent her childhood amid the region’s giant redwoods. By the time she entered college at USC in the late 60s, she was oblivious to Flower Power and instead focused on a degree in dental hygiene. After graduating, Perhacs took up residence in the infamous Laurel Canyon area and began writing the songs that would make up Parallelograms at her kitchen table. Inspired by the wilds of the Pacific Northwest, the dolphins at play in the Sea of Cortez became “Dolphins,” while a storm on the Olympic Peninsula led to “Chimacum Rain.” It was a dental patient of hers, Academy Awards-winning film composer Leonard Rosenman, who asked to hear her demos and soon landed her a record deal. While driving home late one night, she had a vision of light that became the album’s centerpiece, “Parallelograms.”
Ignored upon its initial release, Parallelograms seemingly sank without a trace, and Perhacs gave up making music for the next forty years. Psych fans the world over unearthed and began to obsess over this album in the meantime: a spine-tingling blend of crystalline vocal melodies from Perhacs, mind-expanding sound effects, and on the title track, one of the finest aural hallucinations ever captured, equal parts “sound sculpture” and “visual music.” Open up Parallelograms and enter Linda Perhacs’ magical world.

I’m very excited to say that I will be talking to the one and only Robert Wyatt this Thursday on Beyond Beyond is Beyond on East Village Radio!
Domino Records has just reissued the landmark records of Robert Wyatt – one of the most distinguished, visionary, influential and singular catalogues in contemporary music. These reissues are the first time many of these albums have ever been available on vinyl domestically; and most of the titles have been out of print for several years.
And also, Wyatt, Atzmon, Stephen’s For The Ghosts Within, is out now on Domino. This new collaborative album by Robert Wyatt, saxophonist/composer Gilad Atzmon and violinist/composer Ros Stephen is a tour de force of contemporary composition, once again highlighting Robert Wyatt’s distinct role as a collaborator and conspirator, and his never-ending appetite to create new musical languages.
So tune in to Beyond Beyond is Beyond for my Robert Wyatt interview on Thursday, 12/9 at noon eastern!

I’m a music lover and I’ve always stolen music. I’ve always bought music too, but when you crave music the way that I do, you’ve got to do some stealing. It’s a balance.
Well, I guess the earliest form of stealing came from holding the tape recorder up to the radio to record songs. Then it moved on to recording albums onto cassette from either records or factory cassettes. Then on to actually stealing cassettes from fine retailers, such as Sears. Then on to CD burning, then on to file-sharing and downloading full albums via the internet. One could even argue that buying used vinyl is a glorified way of stealing. Hey, the record company doesn’t get paid when I buy an album for $1 at a street fair or in a shop.
Anyway, the point is…the balance. The good and the bad. The evil and divine. The heaven and hell. The dualities of which Ronnie James Dio always sang.
One of the cassettes that I stole from Sears when I was a 12-year old newbie rocker was a classic duality. It contained the full Ozzy-led Paranoid album on one side and on the other side, the full Dio-led Heaven and Hell album. Well, Paranoid is the obvious classic there, but it was the then-surprise other side that knocked me out…and that I played over and over. It was a time when I was just learning about Dio. Shit, I was just learning about everybody! But I was just putting the pieces together that this guy who I knew was currently in a killer band called Dio was named Ronnie James Dio and actually took over for Ozzy in Black Sabbath! So that’s what this is! Whoa!
Fucking mind-blowing.
Well, the stealing of cassettes didn’t last too long, as a friend and I were busted at Sears the first time that the friend tried to make off with some jams. Our first lesson in crime and punishment. But not before I put some classic music in my library and my soul.
And Ronnie has now completed life’s biggest duality. Death. But not before putting some classic music in all of our souls. If anyone can make peace with the afterlife, it’s got to be Ronnie. And his music will always go on to be cherished by lovers of the best duality in the world…rock & roll! …Or is that just a hendiadys? Well, it’s close enough for rock & roll!
Cheers to you, Ronnie, may you rest in peace. Thanks for all the great music and magic that you put into the world. You rock! And, more importantly, WE ROCK!
Come on out on May 15th and we shall rock…
I got the great opportunity to host excellent record label, Mexican Summer’s Spring podcast. Check it on out. It’s chock full of great tunagio! And there shall be another one coming up in the summer. Dig…
I’m very pleased to announce that I’ll be interviewing Exmagma’s Andy Goldner on the next Beyond Beyond is Beyond show! I’ve been diggin’ Exmagma since I stumbled on their first and second albums from ’73 and ’74 a few years ago. And then my mind completely blew when I heard Exmagma 3, which was done in ’75 and never released until 2006!!! Then the pieces of my blown mind got together to form another human being who now lives inside my head, when I heard Andy Goldner’s 1978 solo album, Infinity.

If you don’t know Exmagma, get acquainted with this one… Exmagma-Box 25
And check out this amazing Andy Goldner promo video from ’78!
And you can find all the Exmagma and Goldner albums at Anthology Recordings
And tune in to East Village Radio at noon eastern on Thursday to hear my interview with Andy!

It’s nice to get an occasional pat on the back for the love that you put into your work…you know? And in the world of commercial radio, it’s hard to know what’s good and bad and what’s right and wrong anymore…and I would venture to say that anyone in radio that thinks they know, simply don’t.
As the head writer and associate producer for our very small Nights With Alice Cooper production team, we are constantly doing a balancing act between playing to formula and being innovative. So it was nice to see NWAC (among other great terrestrial, satellite and internet programs) recognized in the most recent Elmore Magazine.
Reversing a long decline, a new flowering of soulful and creative rock programming has gained momentum on the radio. It is heard on commercial and public/community terrestrial stations, via satellite and on the Internet.
Inventive, imaginative, hip music programming is cropping up or becoming established on stations and websites, allowing listeners once starved for variety and ‘deep catalogue’ to hear everything from Alice Cooper’s favorite 1960s-era garage-rock songs to funky, forgotten post-war blues gems from Cincinnati’s King Records.”
