Tune in to Beyond Beyond is Beyond on East Village Radio on Thursday at noon and hear me chat with the organizers of the remarkable ATP NY music fest, which has no corporate sponsors and is the smallest and coolest festival I’ve ever been to!

Hey Beyonderz,

Tune in live to Beyond Beyond is Beyond on East Village Radio at noon on New Year’s Eve, exactly 12 hours before 2010 starts!  I’ll be playing some of my ‘Best 0f’s’ from 2009 and a bunch of exclusive live performances of BBiB guests right from the EVR booth.  Live stuff from Alberta Cross, Imelda May, The Amazing, The Blakes, Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears, Mother Hips, Life on Earth, y mas!

And 9 hours later, come out to my stoned New Year’s extravaganza at Heathers Bar in the East Village (13th between A & B). $6 suggested donation (NY Times Neediest Cases Fund) gets you a right good time, free Brooklyn Beer from 9 to 10 pm, a chance to win fabulous prizes…and DJ Rudeboy and I provide your song and dance.  Here are all the details.

Happy New Year to you all!  Cheers, brilliant, right, cheers!

Mike

I went to see Rolling Stone‘s David Fricke interview Lou Reed, Maureen ‘Moe’ Tucker, and Doug Yule of the Velvet Underground last night at the New York Public Library.  No, there was no performance or reunion announcement or even anything remotely deep that the VU hardcore wouldn’t know already.

I must admit that I originally bought tickets immediately after seeing these lines on the NYPL’s website, which really painted an ambiguous picture:

Today, the Velvet Underground are the stars they always deserved to be, with a rich and still mysterious story that continues to unfold: in the new visual collection, The Velvet Underground: New York Art, and tonight, in this unprecedented reunion of Reed, Tucker and Yule-the words, music and rhythm of The Velvet Underground.

Yeah, I was thinking there would be a performance…at least for the couple minutes it took to buy the tickets.  All that said, it was a very cool night of discussion in which I got some decent pictures and confirmed a few things in my mind…

…everybody’s got a CMJ story, right?  So here’s mine.

Thursday afternoon, I was lucky enough to have two bands (The Amazing and The Blakes) on my East Village Radio show.  Both bands played a couple live tunes and sounded fan-fukkin’-tastic!  Actually, you can check out the post-show roundup via this here link… The Amazing and The Blakes on Beyond Beyond is Beyond on 10/22/09 (there’s even a couple great YouTube videos of the two Amazing songs).

Then, Thursday night, the good folks at Kemado/Mexican Summer Records were kind enough to have me out at their soiree in my old neighborhood of Carroll Gardens, where I got nice and toasted with the guys from The Amazing.  ‘Twas a blast of a time.  And Farmer Dave Scher played a pleasing set to an intimate group of pretzel-eaters.

Friday night led me to some great adventures.  Mind you, my CMJ path is anything but typical…as I never even saw Surfer Blood play once!  Not only that, I typically have to work weeknights, so I just can’t be doing that shit all week long.  Not to mention that my liver wouldn’t be able to handle more than the 3 days that I did!

Read on to find out how Chris Squire fits into this equation…
